What Makes One Install Cost More Than Another?

The quoted price for the same brand and size unit can vary by thousands depending on these three things.

01

Room size and ceiling height

Bigger rooms need bigger units. High ceilings lose heat faster and need more capacity. This is the single biggest driver of price variation within a system type. Getting the sizing right means we measure properly, not guess.

02

Installation complexity

A simple back-to-back install where the outdoor unit goes directly through the wall is the most affordable. Long pipe runs, second-storey access, concrete or brick walls, and difficult outdoor unit positions all add time and cost.

03

Brand and unit spec

Premium brands like Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin cost more upfront than budget options but run quieter, last longer, and hold their efficiency better in a cold Takapuna winter. For coastal locations, the extra investment is usually worth it.

Additional Costs to Be Aware Of

Most installs are straightforward. But depending on your home, some of these may apply. Craig and the team identify all of these on the site visit and include them clearly in your quote before any work begins.

Long pipe runs beyond standard 3 metres
Most quotes include up to 3 metres of refrigerant pipe. If the outdoor unit needs to go further away, extra pipe is charged per metre.
~$80 per metre
Switchboard upgrade
Older North Shore homes sometimes have switchboards at capacity or with outdated wiring. An upgrade is required before installation can proceed safely.
$300 to $1,500+
Dedicated circuit breaker for large units
Units over 6kW often require a dedicated switchboard circuit. This adds a new circuit breaker and wiring from the board to the unit.
$200 to $500
Second-storey or difficult access
Installations on the second floor or in areas with restricted outdoor access take longer and may require additional equipment.
$200 to $600
Concrete or brick wall drilling
Timber-framed walls are straightforward. Concrete block or brick walls require core drilling, which takes more time and specialist equipment.
$150 to $400
Ground slab or wall bracket for outdoor unit
If the outdoor unit can't be wall-mounted and there's no suitable surface, a concrete pad or custom bracket may be needed.
$150 to $350
Condensation pump
If the indoor unit can't drain by gravity, a small condensation pump is needed to remove the water. Common in apartments and some older homes.
$150 to $300
Wi-Fi control module
Optional. Lets you control your heat pump from your phone. Not all units include this as standard.
$100 to $300
Peak season pricing
Demand for installations spikes in winter and summer. Installing in autumn or spring is often quicker and can be slightly cheaper.

Cost Questions We Get Asked All the Time

Why do online prices look cheaper than real quotes?
+
Online "from" prices almost always show the unit cost only, or the cheapest possible back-to-back install with no extras. Your quote will be higher if your home needs longer pipe runs, an electrical upgrade, or a non-standard outdoor unit position. That's not hidden fees, that's just what your specific job actually costs. Craig and the team will explain every line item before you commit to anything.
Does the price include the heat pump or is that separate?
+
All of our prices are supply and install. The unit, the installation labour, the standard pipe run, the electrical connection, and the commissioning are all included. The only things that may be added are the extras listed above, and those are only charged if they actually apply to your home.
Is it cheaper to buy the unit myself and just pay for installation?
+
Generally no. When you supply your own unit, you lose the installer's trade pricing, take on the warranty risk yourself, and sometimes void the manufacturer warranty if the unit wasn't supplied by a registered installer. It's rarely worth it. Craig and the team have trade accounts with all the major brands and pass those prices on.
Can I save money by installing in summer or winter?
+
Autumn and spring are the quieter seasons for heat pump installation. Installers are less stretched, lead times are shorter, and there's less chance of peak-season pricing. If you're not in a rush, booking in March to May or September to November is the sweet spot for both availability and cost.
