The Fastest, Most Affordable Install Craig Does

A single room heat pump is exactly what it sounds like — one indoor unit, one outdoor unit, one room. It's the most common install on the North Shore and the one Craig can do in half a day.

Most single room installs use a high wall unit, mounted near the ceiling and pushing warm or cool air across the room. It's the proven, reliable choice for bedrooms, lounges and home offices across Takapuna and the North Shore. See the full heat pump installation page for all options.

What Room Are You Heating?

Single room installs work for any room type. Here are the three most common on the North Shore.

Bedroom

From $2,500 installed

The most common single room install on the North Shore. A 2.5 to 3.5kW high wall unit mounted above the bed wall heats a standard bedroom quietly and efficiently. Craig sizes it right so it doesn't run flat out on cold nights.

Most popular

Lounge or living room

From $3,000 installed

The main living space in most North Shore homes. A 3.5 to 5kW unit handles a standard lounge well. Craig checks ceiling height and room layout on the site visit to make sure the airflow reaches all corners.

Family favourite

Home office or study

From $2,500 installed

With more North Shore homeowners working from home, a dedicated office heat pump is increasingly common. A smaller unit keeps the room at a comfortable working temperature without heating the rest of the house.

Craig's honest take

Starting with one room is smart if you genuinely only need one room heated. But if you know you'll want the bedroom and the lounge eventually, it's worth having a conversation about a two-room system upfront. Two separate installs later will cost you more than doing it together now. I'll give you the honest numbers on the site visit so you can decide.

Could You Get Your Single Room Heat Pump for as Little as $400?

Single Room Heat Pump Questions

Does a single room heat pump meet Healthy Homes standards for a rental property?
+
Yes. A correctly sized heat pump installed in the main living area of a rental property meets the Healthy Homes heating standard, which requires heating capacity of at least 1.5kW in the main living room. Craig installs for many North Shore landlords and knows the standard well. He will confirm compliance on the site visit and provide the documentation you need.
How long does a single room heat pump installation take?
+
Most single room installs take 4 to 6 hours. Craig mounts the indoor unit, runs the pipework and cable through or around the wall, installs the outdoor unit on a bracket or pad, connects the electrics, and commissions the system. Most jobs are running before lunch on installation day.
What if I want to add more rooms later?
+
A single room install doesn't lock you in. If you decide later to heat more rooms, Craig can add separate units to additional rooms, or if you want to upgrade to a multi-room system Craig will give you an honest comparison of the costs at that point. Starting with one room and seeing how you get on is a perfectly sensible approach. Read more on the multi-room heat pump page.
Can I get the Warmer Kiwi Homes grant for a single room install?
+
Yes. The Warmer Kiwi Homes grant covers single room high wall heat pump installs. Eligible homeowners pay as little as $400 to $700 out of pocket, with the grant covering up to 90% capped at $3,450. Craig is a registered provider and handles all the paperwork. Check your eligibility here.
What size unit do I need for my room?
+
A bedroom under 20m2 typically needs a 2.5kW unit. A standard lounge needs 3.5 to 5kW. Older homes or south-facing rooms may need the next size up. Craig does a proper heat load calculation on every site visit to make sure you get the right size. You can also try the sizing calculator for a rough idea before he visits.
How much does a single room heat pump cost to run?
+
Based on 2026 Auckland power rates of 25 to 30c per kWh, expect to pay roughly 30 to 80 cents per hour to run a well-sized unit on a cold evening. That's about the same as running a couple of light bulbs. A heat pump delivers 3 to 5 units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses, making it far cheaper to run than a plug-in electric heater or a gas fire.
Do I need a council permit?
+
Usually no. Single room heat pump installations are a permitted activity under Auckland Council rules as long as the outdoor unit placement doesn't breach boundary setbacks or create unreasonable noise for neighbours. Craig handles the placement to keep you compliant and will flag anything unusual on the site visit.
