What Is a Multi-Room Heat Pump and Why Choose It?

A multi-room system, sometimes called a multi-split, connects one outdoor compressor to multiple indoor units across your home. Each indoor unit has its own remote control so every room can be set to a different temperature independently.

On the North Shore it's the most popular whole-home heating solution for homes that aren't suited to a fully ducted system. It costs less than ducted, installs faster, and gives you individual room control that most ducted systems can't match without expensive zoning add-ons.

  • One outdoor unit instead of multiple, cleaner exterior appearance
  • Each room heated and cooled independently at its own temperature
  • More affordable than a fully ducted whole-home system
  • Works well in older North Shore homes where ducted access is difficult
  • Installed in a single day for most 2 to 3 room configurations
  • Mix indoor unit types in the same system. A sleek high wall in the lounge, a floor mounted console in the drafty conservatory, and a small bedroom unit, all running off the same outdoor box

How a Multi-Room System Works

One outdoor unit does all the heavy lifting. The indoor units in each room connect back to it via refrigerant pipe. Running pipes to multiple rooms takes planning. Craig maps out the shortest, tidiest route on the site visit to keep labour costs down and your home looking clean.

Straight-up tip from Craig

One thing to know: because everything runs off one outdoor unit, if that unit needs a part, the whole house is out of action. That's why I only install the big reliable brands like Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin for multi-room systems. You want a unit that's built to last and has parts available in Auckland if something goes wrong in 10 years.

Multi-Room vs Ducted vs Single Units: Which Is Right?

Three ways to heat multiple rooms. Here is the honest difference between them for North Shore homeowners.

Multi-room system

One outdoor unit, multiple rooms

  • One outdoor unit for the whole home
  • Each room controlled independently
  • Works in older homes where ducted is difficult
  • Lower cost than ducted, $7,500 to $14,000
  • Installed in one to two days

Ducted whole-home

Hidden in the ceiling, no wall units

  • No visible indoor units anywhere
  • Even temperature throughout the home
  • Needs good ceiling cavity access
  • Higher cost, $8,000 to $25,000
  • Takes 2 to 3 days to install

Multiple single units

One high wall per room, separate outdoor units

  • Multiple outdoor units on the exterior
  • Each room fully independent
  • Can be cheaper for 2 rooms, comparable for 3
  • More outdoor units, busier exterior
  • Craig will compare both options on the site visit

Multi-Room Heat Pump Questions

Is a multi-room system (multi-split) cheaper than separate heat pumps in each room?
+
For two rooms it's often similar in price or slightly more expensive than two separate high wall units. For three or more rooms the multi-room system usually wins on total cost because you're only paying for one outdoor unit and one electrical connection. You also get a cleaner exterior with just one outdoor unit rather than three or four. Craig will compare both options honestly on the site visit so you can see the actual numbers before deciding. Read more on the single room heat pump page.
Can all rooms run at the same time?
+
Yes. All indoor units can run simultaneously. The outdoor unit is sized to handle the total capacity of all connected indoor units running at once. Craig sizes the outdoor unit correctly on the site visit so the system isn't underpowered on the coldest winter nights.
Can I mix different indoor unit types in the same system?
+
Yes. You can have a ceiling cassette in the open plan living area, high wall units in the bedrooms, and a floor mounted unit in a conservatory, all connected to the same outdoor unit. Craig will design the right mix for your home and confirm which combinations the chosen brand supports.
Multi-room or ducted, which is right for my home?
+
Multi-room is the better option for most existing North Shore homes, especially older ones where the ceiling access for ducted is limited. Ducted makes more sense for new builds or full renovations where the ceiling is open, or for homeowners who specifically want no visible wall units anywhere. The price difference closes as you add more rooms. Craig will give you an honest recommendation on the site visit. Read more on the ducted heat pump page.
Do I need a council permit?
+
Usually no. Standard multi-room installations are a permitted activity under Auckland Council rules as long as the outdoor unit placement doesn't breach boundary setbacks or create unreasonable noise for neighbours. Craig handles the placement to keep you compliant and will flag anything unusual during the site visit.
