Why Toshiba Is the Dark Horse of Heat Pumps

Toshiba invented inverter technology. Every other brand on this site uses tech that started in a Toshiba lab. They don't spend as much on TV ads as Mitsubishi or Daikin, but they put that money into the longest warranty in New Zealand.

Warranty

10-year full warranty — while every other brand gives you 5 or 6

Parts and labour, the whole unit, for a full decade. If it develops a fault in year nine, you do not pay a cent. It is the ultimate set-and-forget choice. Two years longer than Fujitsu's 6-year offer and five years longer than Daikin, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, LG and Samsung.

Design

The only unit in NZ that looks like furniture rather than an appliance

The Haori has an interchangeable fabric cover in six colours. Swap it out to match your curtains or sofa. Won the iF Design Award and the Good Design Award. If you hate the look of a white plastic box on your wall and ducted is not an option, there is nothing else like it in NZ.

Magic Coil

Dust and mould don't stick to the internals the way they do on other brands

Toshiba coats the internal coil with an acrylic resin. Dust, water and mould do not stick. The unit stays cleaner between services, the airflow stays efficient, and you do not get that musty smell that builds up when a coil gets dirty. A practical feature most people never know they need.

Noise

20dB — a quiet library is 40dB. The Shorai Edge runs at half that.

The Shorai Edge runs as low as 20dB indoors. It also has a specific Outdoor Silent Mode to keep neighbours happy if your section is tight. On the North Shore where sections can be small and fences thin, that outdoor mode matters.

Air Quality

Shorai Edge filters capture 94% of PM2.5 particles

The Shorai Edge has an Ultra Pure Filter at 94% PM2.5 efficiency plus plasma air filtration on top. If anyone in the house has asthma or allergies, that is the strongest filtration of any high wall we install.

Running Cost

The brand that invented inverter technology still makes very good inverters

Toshiba's DC hybrid inverter was a world first. Today their inverters adjust compressor speed constantly to match room conditions, using only the power actually needed. You get 3 to 5 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity used.

Rough Pricing So You Know What to Expect

Every install is different, but these are typical ranges for supply and installation on the North Shore in 2026. Your free quote will give you a fixed price for your specific home.

$1,900 – $4,200
High Wall, Single Room

Seiya Plus, Shorai Edge or Haori, supply and install. Back-to-back installs at the lower end, longer pipe runs quoted fairly on the day. No surprises.

$6,000 – $14,000
Multi Room

One outdoor unit, multiple indoor heads. Price varies by number of rooms and pipe run length. We price each job individually at quote time.

$8,000 – $20,000
Ducted, Whole Home

Fully hidden in ceiling or floor. Price depends on home size, number of zones and access for ducting. Most popular for new builds and full renovations.

For a full breakdown see our heat pump installation cost guide. The Warmer Kiwi Homes subsidy can reduce the high-wall cost significantly if you qualify.

How We Install (The Craig Standard)

1

The right-size assessment

We don't just guess. We check your room's orientation and insulation. We also check boundary noise rules so the outdoor unit goes in the right spot. If you are looking at the Haori, we bring the fabric swatches so you can see how the colours look in your actual light.

Room size and ceiling height

Determines the kW you actually need, not the closest bracket size.

Insulation and orientation

A north-facing, well-insulated room needs less capacity than a south-facing room with single glazing.

Indoor unit position

Affects whether the heat reaches the whole room or just the end nearest the unit.

Outdoor unit placement

Boundary noise rules, airflow clearance and salt air exposure on North Shore installs.

2

The install itself

Craig holds an EPA Refrigerant Handling Licence. No shortcuts on the refrigerant side. All wiring is done to code by a registered electrician. We position the outdoor unit to meet North Shore noise rules. We get the app running on your phone before we pack up. Every install is backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee on top of the 10-year Toshiba warranty.

Support for life — we look after our own

We save our repair and service time exclusively for our own customers. If we installed your Toshiba, you are our priority. Whether it is a routine service in year three or a warranty check in year nine, you call us directly. We don't fix units put in by other people.

Could You Pay as Little as $400 for Your Toshiba?

The Warmer Kiwi Homes grant covers up to 90% of the cost, capped at $3,450. Most eligible homeowners pay just $400 to $700 out of pocket. Craig is a registered provider and handles all the paperwork. Takes 2 minutes to check your eligibility.

Toshiba Installation FAQ

Which Toshiba model is right for my room?

For most bedrooms and single rooms the Seiya Plus is the answer. It is quiet, efficient and comes with the 10-year warranty at a good price point. If air quality matters or you want a sleeker look, the Shorai Edge adds the Ultra Pure Filter and the matt straight-line design. If you want the unit to be a design feature rather than a white box, the Haori is the one. We assess the room first and tell you exactly which model fits before you commit.

What is the Haori and is it worth the extra cost?

The Haori is a Toshiba high wall heat pump with a textile fabric cover instead of the standard plastic front. The cover comes in six colours and you can swap it out whenever you want. It won the iF Design Award. The heating and cooling performance is the same as the Shorai Edge underneath. It costs a bit more than the standard models. If you are putting a heat pump in a room where looks matter and ducted is not an option, it is worth considering.

How long does the install take?

A standard high-wall Toshiba install takes a few hours. Multi-room systems usually take a full day. Ducted systems take one to two days depending on the size of the home. We confirm the timeframe when we come out for the quote.

What warranty does a Toshiba come with?

Toshiba offers a 10-year full parts and labour warranty on residential high wall heat pumps in NZ. That covers the whole unit, not just the compressor. It is the longest warranty of any brand we install. Our installation work is also covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee on top of that.

Can I get a Toshiba on the Warmer Kiwi Homes subsidy?

Yes, many Toshiba models qualify. The subsidy covers up to 90% of the installed cost, capped at $3,450, for eligible homeowners. Most people who qualify pay $400 to $700 out of pocket. Craig is a registered WKH provider and can check your eligibility when you get in touch.

Who handles servicing and repairs after the install?

Craig handles all servicing and repairs on every unit he installs. Annual service to keep the warranty valid, anything that comes up: you call us. We don't work on heat pumps we didn't install.

Do you install Toshiba across the whole North Shore?

Yes. Takapuna, Devonport, Milford, Birkenhead, Glenfield, Albany, Silverdale, the East Coast Bays and the Hibiscus Coast. If you are not sure whether we reach your street, call us and we will tell you in 30 seconds.

Not Set on Toshiba? We Install All Major Brands

We install all major brands and we are not paid more to recommend one over another. Toshiba is less common on North Shore walls than Mitsubishi Electric or Daikin, but that is a marketing budget difference, not a quality difference. Toshiba invented inverter technology. Their 10-year warranty reflects genuine confidence in the product. If you are weighing up Toshiba against the bigger names: Toshiba leads on warranty length and on design with the Haori. Mitsubishi Electric leads on noise levels. Panasonic leads on air quality with nanoe X. Daikin leads on the US7 fresh air feature. The right one depends on your room, your budget and what matters most to you.
